Wearing Orthotics? 3 Reasons Why You Should Always Lace and Unlace Your Shoes

Updated: Dec 2

We get it - slipping your shoes on and off is tempting. It’s quick, easy, and saves you a few seconds. But this small habit can lead to big problems for your footwear, your orthotics, and even your overall comfort.

Here’s why taking the time to properly lace and unlace your shoes is well worth it.

  1. A Quick Exercise Boost

Think of lacing your shoes as a micro workout. It might be the only exercise you get during a busy day, so why not take advantage? Bending, reaching, and tightening those laces keeps your body moving and sets you up for a better gait once you’re on your feet.

  1. Orthotics Need Proper Fit to Work

If you use orthotics, loose laces can completely throw off their effectiveness. When your shoes are loose enough to slip on, your foot slides too far forward while walking. This misalignment means you’re not sitting on the orthotic’s “pocket,” where the arch correction and padding are designed to support you.

Look at this photo example.

The wear shows that the foot is shifting approximately a quarter of an inch too far forward.

The result is that the arch correction and other padding are no longer in the right place.

This small shift is enough to reduce the benefits of your orthotics, leaving your foot without proper support and potentially causing discomfort.

3. To Protect Your Shoes’ Structure

Repeatedly slipping your foot into laced shoes destroys the heel counter - that’s the firm part at the back of the shoe that gives it structure and keeps your foot stable.

A crushed heel counter reduces your shoes’ ability to provide support and stability, leading to a less secure fit.

The Bottom Line

Taking a few extra seconds to lace and unlace your shoes may feel like a hassle, but it’s a simple step that protects your footwear, improves the effectiveness of your orthotics, and ensures your feet get the support they deserve.

Next time you’re tempted to slip and go, remember your feet will thank you later!
